About the Philadelphia Committee for Independent Culture

The Philadelphia Committee for Independent Culture (PCIC) is an eclectic grouping of volunteers from Philadelphia and the surrounding community who have varying levels of performance/production experience.

PCIC is a not-for-profit, volunteer driven independent production group dedicated to multiculturalism, independence, and developmental theater. It's goal is to create an arts center by and for regular Philadelphians. Developmental theater is a production approach in which everyone—artist and audience alike—can grow and develop.

Key to developmental theater is the discovery that performance—off stage (in life) as well as on—is a growthful activity. We view performance as developmental adult play—a way of developing in day-to-day life: going beyond yourself, doing what you don't know how to do.

PCIC is affiliated with a national network of independent cultural centers dedicated to developmental theater. This network includes the founding Castillo Theater in NYC, a successful off off Broadway cultural center that showcases postmodern political theater, cutting edge Black theater and the international avant garde, including the ground-breaking works of artistic director Fred Newman.

The Founder and Director of PCIC, Jennifer Bullock

Jennifer has received training in New York on the theatrical production process, directing, and improvisational acting techniques. A long-time patron of Castillo Theater in New York, Jennifer was inspired by their moving and challenging productions—especially the dedication to democratizing theater; a process which brings together different people who don't typically create together.

Jennifer's commitment is to creating a new kind of culture and new ways of doing theater.

Additionally, Jennifer is a practicing psychotherapist in the Philadelphia area for over 15 years, using a unique performatory therapy approach in working with clients called Social Therapy.
